Waste Free Oceans Foundation won the Sustainable Prize of the Conseil Fédéral du Développement Durable
The journalists Mrs. Corinne Boulangier and Mrs. Ombeline Oversacq received the award from His Royal Highness Prince Philippe of Belgium.
The CFDD prize awards the journalists for radio broadcasts, TV programmes or videos in which the subject is sustainable development. This implies that integrated approach of economic, social and environmental thinking is expressed in the programme also taking into account the global aspect and long-term perspective.
The prize "Sustainable Development for the Press CFDD" is a prize for newspapers and audio-visual media. The winners were nominated by a panel of communication experts.
During the awards, a piece of the radio broadcast was played in combination with some images of the Waste Free Oceans activities during 2011. The participants showed special interest in the launches and activities of WFO.
Mrs. Boulangier and Mrs. Oversacq noted: "WFO initiative was broadcasted on our radio show NUWA. The jury stressed that this initiative is really interesting for the environment and covers a fairly rigorous but attractive subjects that sometimes are difficult to explain".
Mrs. Luc Mellaerts, Vice-President of WFO noted: "This prize is the recognition of the society for our initiative. Our goal is to show to the people how our initiatives and activities help to the environment. Joining forces among the industry, the fisheries sector and the recyclers we can contribute to a sustainable future".
On the 8th of November 2011, Waste Free Oceans was launched in Belgium with the support of EU Commissioner Maria Damanaki (Maritime Affairs & Fisheries) and MEP Mrs. Anna Rosbach. The event was launched in collaboration with SDVO (Foundation for Sustainable Fishery Development) and Federplast (Belgian Association of Manufacturers of Plastic and Rubber Products).
During the Belgian event in the port of Ostend the press had a chance to see how the THOMSEA trawl and the Belgian fishermen operate in order to collect floating marine debris and bring it to recycling companies.
