CASSIDIAN to compile Interactive Electronic Technical Documentation (IETD) for German Navy's P-3C Orion aircraft
- Digital system facilitates utilisation and management of documentation for P-3C ORION CUP maritime patrol aircraft
- CASSIDIAN wins international competition
- CASSIDIAN is the new name of EADS Defence & Security
Cassidian has been commissioned with compiling Interactive Electronic Technical Documentation (IETD) for the German Navy's P-3C ORION CUP maritime patrol aircraft. The corresponding contract, worth a total of around 15 million euros, was signed on 28 October 2010 by the German Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) and the respective Business Unit Cassidian Air Systems. The choice of Cassidian for compiling the P-3C IETD furthermore constitutes a trailblazing prerequisite for updating the P3-C documentation in the years to come.
Cassidian Air Systems prevailed over numerous national and international competitors in a Europe-wide request for proposals by virtue of its economically attractive concept for creating an IETD. The concept was devised in collaboration with partner company ESG, which supports Germany's P3-C Orion fleet.
The new task consists primarily in converting the present hard-copy technical documentation for the P-3C Orion into SGML-based digital documentation that can be displayed on a standardised browser system (IETP-X Bw) and used interactively. The system constitutes a significant improvement in terms of both usability and revision services: the maintenance personnel can access all documentation from a computer workplace or a portable computer at any time, benefiting from all the advantages of digitisation such as search functions, direct links to follow-up instructions, and possibility of enlarging image details.
Over 30,000 pages of text and image documents are being revised, digitised and newly created for the IETD at Cassidian Air Systems in Manching. The task is to be completed by 2013.
Since the introduction of the P-3C ORION CUP maritime patrol aircraft, which was acquired from the Dutch Navy in 2006, system support has been performed by the P-3C system support consortium comprising Cassidian Air Systems and ESG. Besides technical and logistical support (which includes compiling and updating the documentation), Cassidian Air Systems is responsible for maintaining the aircraft and providing development engineering support.
