Focus on packaging
"Packing Allround" seminar in Valencia impressed Spanish visitors / Successful presentation of new Allrounder Hidrive high-performance machines
Energy efficiency and its influence
The event began with a number of specialist presentations. Jörg Bruder, technical advisor at the Spanish subsidiary Arburg S.A., spoke about cost-efficient injection moulding in the packaging sector and explained the many factors that play a role in terms of energy efficiency. These include not just the machine technology, but also the entire energy management strategy in the company, production organisation, product design, machine design and settings as well as temperature control. He subsequently presented the product range and its advantages: Due to their modularity, the Allrounder injection moulding machines can be adapted very precisely to the relevant requirements, such as the speed, productivity and energy efficiency demanded in the packaging industry. In addition, the Multilift robotic systems and customer-specific automation solutions also extend the range of Arburg offerings.
Arburg's expertise in the packaging sector
Questions about which series are particularly suited to the packaging industry and how much expertise Arburg possessed in this sector were answered by Martin Cayre, subsidiary manager at Arburg S.A., on the basis of various example applications from the areas of thin-walled items, screw cap closures and in-mould labelling.
In addition to the electric Alldrive Allrounders, the new Allrounder Hidrive series was also presented, featuring a powerful combination of familiar electric and hydraulic machine technology. Thus, Arburg has expanded its range of high-performance injection moulding machines with energy-efficient drive technology for thermoplastic processing with a reduced cycle time.
Jörg Bruder's presentation was complemented by a demonstration by Carlos Vicedo from Hasco which showed the screw cap closure mould developed by his company in cooperation with Arburg. When it came to the design and implementation of the eight-cavity mould, the specific focus lay on the reduction of cycle times, which contributes directly to reduced unit costs. One of the ways this was achieved was through the use of folding cores.
Impressive application examples
A subsequent demonstration proved that the concept works both in theory and in practice. The Hasco mould was used on an electric, energy-efficient Allrounder 470 A with a clamping force of 1,000 kN and size 400 injection unit. This produced the eight screw cap closures in an impressive cycle time of 4.5 seconds.
The second exhibit was an Allrounder 570 H, marking the Spanish debut of the new Allrounder Hidrive series. This high-performance machine with a clamping force of 2,000 kN and a size 800 injection unit was equipped with a two-cavity mould from Hofstetter. Thin-walled margarine tubs with a part weight of 31 grams were produced in a cycle time of 3.4 seconds. Matthias Pasurekt from Hofstetter was on hand to answer the audience's questions regarding the mould technology used in this application. The cooling devices for the two exhibits were provided by Greenbox, which was also represented at the event in the person of Italian marketing manager Valter Vio.
A successful concept
The extremely positive feedback from the participants clearly proved that the concept behind the "Packing Allround" seminar was very well received. They were very impressed with the concise presentation, which covered the latest theoretical and practical topics and requirements of the packaging industry, as well as pointing to future trends. In addition, the various company representatives attending the event meant that experts in the areas of injection moulding, mould technology and temperature control were on hand to answer all questions relating to the production process. Because of the success of the event and the positive feedback received, Arburg S.A. in Spain is already planning the next seminar. This will be held in Sabadell (Barcelona) on 12 November 2009 and will cover all aspects of the complete production cell.
