Arburg loans multi-component machine to Duisburg-Essen University

(PresseBox) (Lossburg, ) .
- New Allrounder will be put to variety of uses
- Two-component machine increases scope of course content
- Research to focus on injection moulding and multi-component processing issues

The Institute of Product Engineering (department of Design and Plastic Machinery) at the Duisburg-Essen University looked forward to 18 April with great expectation. On that day, during a small ceremony, Arburg Sales Advisor Sascha Ebel, Area Sales Manager Thomas Knop and Manager of Applications Technology Dr. Thomas Walther officially handed over the loaned machine, which had already been delivered in February. The Allrounder 470 S, featuring a clamping force of 1,100 kN and size 400 and 290 injection units, will be used both for instruction and research purposes, assisting in the academic training, as well as investigating the practical fundamentals of plastics processing at the Institute.

The various equipment features of the multi-component Allrounder, such as a position-controlled screw, electric core-pull control and hydraulic accumulator technology permit operation using a range of multi-component processes. Further features include a needle shut-off nozzle, air blast device, compression injection moulding and venting equipment, vacuum control and a regulated ejector.

Wide-ranging application options in University research and instruction

Prof. Dr. Johannes Wortberg, Head of the Design and Plastic Machinery department at the Institute for Product Engineering, Group Leader Injection Moulding Jens Dörner and research assistant Christoph Mielicki attended the handover as representatives of the Institute. Jens Dörner describes the planned range of applications for the machine as follows: "Here, the new Allrounder will be used for both instruction and research. In terms of instruction, its main purpose will be to provide hands-on training to BSc and MSc-level mechanical and industrial engineering students so that they can gain in-depth practical experience to accompany their lectures. Owing to the multi-component machine technology, the variety of the instruction can effectively be broadened in its scope.

In terms of research, the machine will mainly be used by research assistants in the injection moulding group, who will focus on various issues regarding injection moulding machines and multi-component injection moulding technology."

Mainly products made from thermoplastics or thermoplastic/filler combinations, for example with electrical or thermal conductivity characteristics, will be produced on the Allrounder. Among other items, bipolar plates for fuel cells will be produced as multi-component moulded parts. Owing to the improved Institute equipment, opportunities for applying for new projects as well as gaining valuable insights in existing projects have now opened up according to Dörner.

Arburg machine technology fits in perfectly with the Institute's plans

When asked about the advantages of the Allrounder for the Institute's work, Dörner explained that, "Thanks to its high-performance and the intuitive Selogica control system, the Allrounder primarily offers us the advantage of being able to precisely coordinate the individual process stages in order to meet extremely high component requirements. With the Arburg Allrounder, we have established and proven machine technology at our disposal, which is predestined for applications in the field of multi-component technology, particularly in terms of quality and modular design. Further interesting information on this subject and on injection moulding research is also available on our homepage at www.uni-due.de/kkm."
